Hit and killed on a traffic stop in Pompeii, motorist flees but is tracked down

A woman was hit by a car traveling at high speed while crossing a pedestrian crossing and later died in hospital due to the very serious injuries sustained in the impact. The motorist, who did not stop to help and actually walked away, was then tracked down by the police.

It happened in Pompeii on the night between Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th September. The news was given by Avs deputy Francesco Emilio Borrelli, who came into possession of images from a video surveillance system.

According to what has been reconstructed, the lady, who was in the company of her husband, was crossing the road in Via Plinio on the pedestrian crossing when she was hit by the pirate car. The victim was transported to hospital in serious condition and later died, while police officers subsequently identified the alleged perpetrator and the car about two kilometers from the crash site. From what we learn, the car had damage consistent with the investment.

"But where has humanity gone?" Borrelli asks himself on his social profiles. "Stopping after an accident and providing assistance should be an elementary gesture of civility, even before being a legal obligation - continues the Avs deputy - For years we have been reporting a real emergency on our roads. Too many motorists and motorcyclists continue to behave as if they were on a race track, putting the lives of others at risk.

We can't just repaint the stripes after every tragedy. We need controls, speed detection, effective sanctions and a culture of respect for life. Road safety cannot be left to luck. The life of a pedestrian must be worth more than the haste of someone behind the wheel."
