Company demonstrates industry's first end-to-end real-time quantum error decoder
AI-generated summary
IonQ is a quantum computing firm that recently acquired SkyWater Technologies and maintains partnerships with major tech and pharmaceutical companies.
Shares of IonQ rose Wednesday after the company said it demonstrated the quantum computing industry's first end-to-end real-time quantum error decoder.
Shares were more than 5% higher in morning trading after surging more than 10% before the bell.
The milestone, which IonQ announced Tuesday, makes it possible for a single standard computer processor to find, fix and decode computer errors as they happen, as it runs continuously in the background.
The successful test stands to alleviate a significant industry bottleneck in which previous systems became easily overwhelmed in fixing errors in the sensitive systems, leading to delays in the system.
"Successfully validating real-time decoding across hundreds of logical qubits and over millions of logical operations is an important milestone. Moreover, the fact that our decoder runs on a single CPU provides a practical path to commercial-scale fault-tolerant quantum computing," quantum research lead Nicolas Delfosse said in a statement Tuesday.
IonQ's partners include AI boom titans Amazon Web Services and Nvidia and pharmaceuticals such as AstraZeneca . IonQ recently raised its full-year revenue guidance following the firm's acquisition of semiconductor manufacturer SkyWater Technologies.
Quantum stocks rose across the board on the news in premarket trading, but most gave back their gains after the open.
"Empirical evidence like this supports our vision for fault tolerance where time-to-solution, cost-to-solution, and energy-to-solution are always our North Star," Jon Gable, VP at IonQ Architecture, added in the release.

YouTube announced a conversational editing tool that uses natural language to assist creators in refining long- and short-form video footage. The tool, demonstrated by creator Happy Kelli, allows users to give AI instructions via chat to select best takes, add music and transitions, and make contextual suggestions. It will be available in YouTube Shorts and the YouTube Create app in early 2027, aiming to speed up editing while preserving creative control.

In 2020, 68% of Italians saw artificial intelligence as something positive; in 2026 the share dropped to 49%, while those who consider it a cause for concern went from 23% to 45%. The Swg-Fondazione Lottomatica survey presented to the Chamber shows that only 4% want to encourage AI without reservations, 80% fear unauthorized access to data or networks, and the favorable opinion is almost entirely conditional on rigorous control.

"Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" commented that comparing AI to a nuclear bomb is absurd, because AI risks come from companies rather than national leaders; it pointed out that Sino-US AI dialogue requires equal cooperation, otherwise China will promote AI research and development without restrictions. The Augustburg Report stated that the EU must deal with trade imbalances, otherwise it will be too late.

Experts from the UK-based Alan Turing Institute warn that humanity could lose effective control over artificial intelligence within five years as superintelligent systems may emerge and outpace human decision-making, urging coordinated action to mitigate risks.

Türkiye Innovation Week (TIW26), organized by the Turkish Exporters Assembly, will be held for the 13th time at the Haliç Congress Center between 15-17 October. The event will discuss the transformation focused on technology and people with the theme of 'Humanity 6.0'.

China Electronics Industrial Basic Research Institute recently demonstrated its progress in the field of third-generation semiconductor silicon carbide. By building a complete product matrix, the institute has achieved large-scale development of silicon carbide products, and has in-depth layout of application scenarios such as new energy vehicles, new energy storage and computing infrastructure, to help integrate the digital economy and energy system.
