Apple confirms iPhone Duo foldable screen has replaceable outer protective layer

One of the most worrying issues with foldable phones is that the crease in the center of the screen may become more and more obvious after being used for a long time. Apple’s first foldable phone, iPhone Duo, also has to face this challenge. However, Apple has confirmed that the outermost layer of the iPhone Duo's folding screen has an "outer protective layer" that can be replaced separately. If there is wear and tear in the future, the entire screen may not have to be replaced directly.

Kate Bergeron, Apple's vice president of hardware engineering, said that in addition to reducing the visual presence of creases through a matte screen coating, iPhone Duo also adds a replaceable "outer protective layer" on top of the folding screen.

She said that Apple has invested a lot of engineering design into this layer of material, hoping to extend the service life as much as possible while maintaining the display effect after long-term use. More importantly, this outer protective layer is not permanently fixed. If it becomes worn after a period of use, the old protective layer can be removed and replaced with a new one.

This means that if the iPhone Duo is frequently opened and closed in the future, causing wear on the screen surface or making the central crease visually more obvious, you can at least start by replacing the outer protective layer, which does not necessarily mean that the entire foldable screen will have to be replaced.

Apple Care+ repair disclosed

Apple Taiwan's official website has also listed the relevant maintenance costs. If you purchase AppleCare+, the cost of replacing the "outer protective layer" is NT$690. If the front screen is damaged, it will be NT$900, and if the inner screen is damaged, it will be NT$3,200. As for the repair price without AppleCare+ protection, it has not been disclosed yet.
