Iran presents new peace proposal to USA – opening of the Strait of Hormuz possible within seven days

Iran is said to have submitted a new proposal to the US government to end the war. The New York Times and the Financial Times unanimously report that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced to journalists on the sidelines of the current UN Week in New York that a plan had been presented to the US government. This stipulates that the Strait of Hormuz can be reopened within seven days if certain conditions are met

The plan could be implemented immediately after the approval of the US government, said Araghtschi. However, the reports do not reveal what conditions Iran is setting.

In the past, the Iranian government had demanded, among other things, that the US release frozen Iranian assets, end the war on all fronts and lift its blockade of Iranian ports and ships. The Islamic Republic also demanded that the US government not interfere in the country's internal affairs. The release of assets, which was already part of a framework agreement between the two sides in June, is described by experts as legally and technically complicated.

When asked about the Iranians' alleged offer to negotiate, the US government said that "positive and constructive discussions" were being held through mediators.

Iran and USA speak again

There had recently been diplomatic contacts between the two sides again as part of the ongoing UN General Assembly in New York. At the same time, US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Massoud Peseschkian struck sharp tones in their speeches to the United Nations and blamed each other.

The war, which began in February with an attack by Israel and the USA, has now lasted seven months. Iran is under considerable economic and military pressure, but it also represents an increasing burden for the Trump administration. In particular, the continued extremely restricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the resulting rise in oil prices and the horrendous costs of the war are likely to have contributed to Trump's recent low approval ratings. The midterm elections in the USA are taking place on November 3rd. In his speech at the UN general debate, Trump said that he believed an agreement with Iran would be reached "right after the election."
