Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez Warns of Far-Right Threat with AfD Winner in Germany

Sanchez spoke at a meeting in Parliament of the Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), which he leads.

Commenting on AfD's victory in the Saxony-Anhalt State Assembly election, Sanchez said, "This result is a warning that the rising far-right threat, largely thanks to the approval of the traditional right, is gaining ground in Europe and around the world." he said.

Claiming that the far-right threat "is a confirmation that the left-wing coalition government in Spain is needed more than ever," Sanchez said, "The world is watching us. We are at the forefront of the fight against reactionism. While providing a fair response to digital and ecological transformations, we are also leading the rise of progressive policies that ensure growth, job creation and the strengthening of the welfare state. Therefore, let us not forget that every day of progress achieved represents a new day gained and a new right." he said.

Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez said that under normal circumstances, the survey results showing PSOE in decline before the general elections to be held next year should not mislead his party, and that they have changed their target to 2030.

On the other hand, PSOE Parliament Speaker Patxi Lopez made the following comment about the rise of the far right in Germany:

"Today is a sad day for Europe. After eighty years, an openly pro-Nazi force, embracing such a dark past and a dictator who committed the greatest atrocities (Adolf Hitler), won an election victory with a terrifying result. This situation leaves us with a task. It is clear that we are needed more than ever. We are the only obstacle standing in their way."

AfD wins Saxony-Anhalt elections

AfD came out on top in the state parliamentary elections held in Saxony-Anhalt by a wide margin, winning with 43.8 percent of the votes.

Although the AfD, which more than doubled its votes compared to the last elections, could not obtain the majority required to come to power in this state on its own, it confirmed the rise of the far right in Germany.
