Istanbul Airport Increased Passenger and Cargo Traffic in August

According to the August air traffic report of the European Airports Council International (ACI EUROPE), Istanbul Airport served 8.6 million passengers, an increase of 3 percent compared to the same month last year.

With this performance, Istanbul Airport became the busiest airport in Europe during the summer period. London Heathrow hosted 7.9 million passengers in August, and Paris Charles de Gaulle hosted 6.9 million passengers.

Passenger traffic at airports across Europe increased by 3.9 percent in July and 3.1 percent in August compared to the same period last year. The increase in airports in Türkiye in August was 4.4 percent.

SABİHA GÖKÇEN RANKS FIRST IN GROWTH

Sabiha Gökçen International Airport also left behind Europe's leading airports with its growth rate in passenger traffic.

Passenger traffic of Sabiha Gökçen, which is in the "major" category and serves more than 40 million passengers annually, increased by 9.5 percent in August compared to the same month of the previous year.

With this rate, Sabiha Gökçen became the fastest growing airport in Europe in its category, followed by Madrid with 4.9 percent, Barcelona with 4.5 percent, Istanbul Airport with 3 percent and Rome Fiumicino with 1.4 percent.

ISTANBUL AIRPORT IS ALSO THE EUROPEAN LEADER IN CARGO

Istanbul Airport stood out in Europe in air cargo as well as passenger traffic.

While air cargo traffic at European airports decreased by 6.1 percent in August compared to the same period last year, cargo traffic at Istanbul Airport increased by 18.1 percent.

Thus, Istanbul Airport recorded the highest growth among the 10 airports with the highest cargo traffic in Europe and ranked first in total cargo volume.

ACI EUROPE's monthly traffic data covers more than 450 airports and represents more than 95 percent of European airport traffic.
