Federal Court orders Barra Mansa to treat 99% of its effluents

According to the Public Ministry, the municipality releases 99% of untreated effluents into the Paraíba do Sul River and other water bodies.

Also according to the Federal Court, the city hall will have 90 days to review and update the sewage planning, in accordance with the rules established by Law No. 11,445/2007, which establishes national guidelines for basic sanitation, and by the New Legal Framework for Basic Sanitation, established by Law No. 14,026/2020.

Within the same period, the municipality must present a technical project to expand or build a new sewage treatment plant with the capacity to meet the city's entire demand.

According to the Federal Court, after obtaining environmental licensing, the station work must be completed within 18 months. The construction and expansion of the sewage collection network, including the connection of public and private properties to the system, must be carried out within 24 months.

The court also ordered the city hall to send quarterly reports to the MPF and Inea. The documents must inform the progress of the works, the costs involved and the service coverage rates.

In a statement, Barra Mansa City Hall stated that it will appeal the decision through the Municipal Attorney General's Office.
