Explorer Kozinoğlu died after falling ill while he was detained in Silivri Prison on 12 November 2011. Within the scope of the investigation carried out regarding his death, evaluations were previously made that the death occurred due to natural causes.
According to the information obtained, after the investigations carried out within the scope of the file, which was brought to the agenda again after years, the investigation file was sent to the Unsolved Perpetrators department.
It was learned that the file will be re-examined after this stage, and new evidence, if any, will be evaluated as well as the information and documents obtained regarding the death incident.
With the investigation into Kozinoğlu's death being reconsidered, it is aimed to investigate all aspects of the death in prison and to reveal whether there is any criminal element in the incident.
PROCEEDINGS WERE STARTED AGAINST 11 SUSPECTS
Within the scope of the investigation into Kozinoğlu's death, legal proceedings were initiated against 11 suspects who were serving in prison on the date of the incident, while 10 were detained and 1 suspect was a fugitive abroad.
MINISTER GÜRLEK ANNOUNCED THE DETAILS
Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek, who made a statement about the investigation on his social media account, used the following statements: We are determined not to leave any suspicious deaths in the dark even as the years pass. It reconsiders the files that raise a question mark in the public conscience, regardless of the passage of time; We are tracking every piece of evidence that can be found.
Former MİT officer Kaşif Kozinoğlu fell ill in Silivri No. 1 L Type Closed Penal Institution, where he was detained, on 12 November 2011, and was referred to Silivri State Hospital; It was determined that he died when he was taken to the hospital.
In the investigation carried out after the incident, camera records and medical documents were examined; Witness statements were taken from the penal institution, gendarmerie and medical staff, his cellmates and the deceased's wife; On April 10, 2012, it was decided that there was no need for prosecution.
Our Unsolved Crimes Investigation Department re-examined the file; In the light of the evaluations made by our Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, the decision of non-prosecution was lifted and the investigation was restarted with the decision of the Silivri Criminal Judgeship of Peace dated 26 August 2026.
Within the scope of the new investigation, a confidentiality decision was taken, a special investigation team was formed and comprehensive studies were initiated to shed light on all aspects of the incident.
At today's stage, our Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has initiated legal proceedings against 11 suspects who were working in the penal institution on the date of the incident; 10 suspects were detained, and 1 suspect was found to be abroad as a FETO fugitive.
In coordination with our Silivri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, Istanbul Provincial Gendarmerie Command and relevant institutions; It continues its work meticulously to reveal the truth, identify those responsible, if any, and ensure that they are held accountable before justice.
We will continue to pursue unsolved murders, suspicious deaths and unanswered files in the public conscience with the same determination. We will not allow any file to be forgotten or any suspicion to be left uninvestigated.
