Comedian Kunal Kamra questioned Mumbai police about upholding the law during a potential protest

MUMBAI: Comedian Kunal Kamra on Sunday asked Mumbai police when he could perform his stand-up in the "entertainment capital", questioning whether the force would uphold the law if a mob tried to disrupt his show. Kamra said his proposed performance would be held peacefully indoors, at a venue with 100 consenting adults and in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. "I... appreciate that Mumbai police has many important responsibilities -- maintaining law and order, preventing crime, managing traffic, watching India's Got Latent and, occasionally, deciding whether I am allowed to tell jokes in a room,," Kamra said in a post on X, tagging Mumbai police. "All I'm asking is if 40-50 humourless people turn up to cancel/disrupt the show or harm the venue, will you allow the hecklers to exercise their veto? . ..Are you with the mob or are you with the law?" Kamra's last major stand-up performance and recording in Mumbai was his 'Naya Bharat' show at The Habitat comedy club in Khar in 2025. Clips from the show sparked protests by Shiv Sena workers, followed by vandalism at the venue and subsequent BMC demolition action at the building. During the show, Kamra performed a parody of a popular Hindi song from 'Dil To Pagal Hai', referring to Eknath Shinde as a "gaddar" (traitor), and also joked about political developments in Maharashtra, including the splits in the Sena and NCP. Kamra is also facing a breach of privilege motion moved by BJP MLC Pravin Darekar.
