The Transport Authority fines the Italian Railway Network 1.75 million euros for the stoppage of trains on 2 October 2024

The Transport Authority fines Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, FS group, 1.75 million euros for the stop of trains on 2 October 2024, which - according to some reconstructions - was attributed to a wire severed by a nail in the Roma Termini hub. The Art resolution was published today, after the Authority had started the sanctioning procedure in July 2025.

"In light of the very serious impact that the emergency of 2 October 2024 had on railway traffic, the conditions exist to ascertain that the Italian Railway Network has not put in place suitable measures to guarantee the operation and maintenance of the infrastructure in such a way as to ensure its accessibility and functionality", reads the resolution.

Furthermore, the violation resulted in "an infringement of the constitutional right to passenger mobility".

The Italian Railway Network responds by reiterating that it has promptly implemented all the necessary measures to ensure the resumption of traffic."

"The incident is attributable to the work of a company external to the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group, engaged in night work. The fact can be classified exclusively as an infrastructure failure and, as such, it was managed through a series of interventions that allowed full operations to be gradually restored, ensuring the progressive return to normality of railway traffic", explains RFI.
