The left of the PSOE pressures the Government to approve urgent measures against the housing crisis

The parties to the left of the PSOE want to take advantage of the social anger that aroused the eviction of Maricarmen, 87 years old, and the mobilization for the right to housing that this has stirred to carry out the measures that they have been demanding for more than half a year. In recent hours, the Government has given a boost to the negotiation of the anti-eviction shield and the extension of rents, approved in March of this year in the Council of Ministers after a sit-in by Sumar, who demanded that it be moved forward despite the fact that it did not have guaranteed support in Congress. That text ended up, in fact, failing in its parliamentary processing, and now, with the mobilization for housing in full activity, the Government is negotiating it again and the minority partner resumes maximum pressure.

"We stood up half a year ago and we will stand up again on Tuesday if necessary [in the next Council of Ministers]," the four parties that make up that Executive bloc point out in a statement: Sumar, Comunes, Más Madrid and Izquierda Unida. "From the parties in the Sumar space we will do, both at the political and institutional level, whatever is necessary to approve this decree now," they go into detail, demanding that the PSOE not "put itself more in profile."

The four groups, immersed in their refoundation process and for which access to a home is a backbone of their discourse, demand that this Tuesday "a package of effective measures to combat the housing crisis" be approved. "Patches are not worth it," they emphasize, and remember that their claims involve the extension of rents - to avoid greater increases in rent -, the "protection of families against evictions and vulture funds", the regulation of "speculative uses" of housing such as tourist apartments and "fraud in seasonal or room rentals."

"This agreement is the responsibility of the government of which we are part, a Government that was born precisely with that mandate," emphasize the four formations to the left of the PSOE, thus increasing the pressure on the majority partner of the Government just a few hours after several demonstrations toured various cities in Spain demanding the right to housing. "Society is not going to accept partial answers or weak measures," warn those from Yolanda Díaz's bloc in the Executive, and point out: "It is enough to listen to the street."
