On Monday, September 28, the Hungarian Parliament accepted the prosecutor's request to lift Prime Minister Peter Magyar's parliamentary immunity. The decision was accepted in the parliament with the votes of 139 deputies, without any opposing votes or abstentions.
Magyar had also previously requested that his immunity be lifted and announced that he would cooperate with the investigation in order to exonerate himself. While the Prime Minister described the file against him as 'nonsense', he argued that his political rivals were trying to target him.
It was also confirmed by independent news sources that the prosecutor's request was forwarded to the parliament last week.
NIGHTCLUB INCIDENT IN 2024
The investigation is based on an incident that occurred in a nightclub in Budapest in June 2024.
According to the prosecution, Magyar took the phone of a person who was filming him on his mobile phone, put it in his pocket and threw the device into the Danube River after an argument.
According to European Parliament documents, police divers later retrieved the phone worth 150 thousand forints (approximately 22.5 thousand TL) from the river and the device was returned to its owner in working condition.
Magyar was a member of the European Parliament at the time of the incident. The European Parliament later did not accept the request to lift his immunity. The file was brought to the agenda again after Magyar's membership in the European Parliament ended and he became the prime minister following the parliamentary elections in Hungary.
With the removal of immunity, the way was opened for Magyar to be questioned as a suspect and to file a lawsuit against him if deemed necessary.
Magyar, on the other hand, argued that prosecutors were trying to present his file in the same framework as the corruption investigations against two former ministers who served under his predecessor Viktor Orban.
Magyar described what happened as an 'attempt to assassinate political character', which he said had failed before.
The Prime Minister also announced last week that he would propose an amendment that would completely abolish parliamentary immunity in crimes subject to public prosecution.
IMMUNITIES ARE REMOVED
According to information gathered from the press, in the same session of the parliament, it was also accepted to lift the immunity of former Minister of Culture Balazs Hanko and former Minister of National Development Miklos Sesztak.
It was reported that an investigation was being conducted against Hanko on the allegation of improper use of more than 40 million euros from public resources, while Sesztak was being investigated on suspicion of receiving millions of dollars in bribes when he was the Minister of National Development between 2014 and 2018.
IT WAS MEMORED WITH DRUGS AND VIOLENCE
Discussions regarding Magyar's private life have come to the fore before. His ex-wife and former Minister of Justice Judit Varga accused her ex-husband of domestic violence and psychological pressure during their marriage after the secret audio recording published by Magyar in March 2024.
According to Associated Press and Euronews, Varga claimed that he said some of the statements in the recording under fear and pressure; He repeated his allegations of violence and blackmail in July 2025. Magyar has denied these accusations from the beginning and claimed that the allegations were used for political purposes.
Magyar also faced allegations that he used drugs in February 2026. Euronews reported that Magyar publicly denied the drug accusations, which emerged around an image he said was secretly recorded with his ex-girlfriend.
