Turhan Çömez brought access barriers to the agenda of the Parliament

İYİ Party Group Deputy Chairman and Balıkesir Deputy Turhan Çömez brought the access barriers to internet news and social media accounts to the agenda of the Parliament with a written question requesting the Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek to answer.

Çömez's motion included ANKA News Agency's news about the press conference held by İYİ Party Samsun Deputy Erhan Usta in the Turkish Grand National Assembly on September 23. Çömez stated that access to the news, which conveys Usta's statements about fund markets, portfolio management companies, Borsa Istanbul and the supervision of the Capital Markets Board (CMB), was blocked by the decision of the Ankara 1st Criminal Judgeship of Peace dated September 24, 2026, and pointed out that the same statement is accessible on the official website of the Turkish Grand National Assembly.

In his motion, Çömez said, "Imposing an access ban on the news of a media outlet reporting a statement of a member of parliament published on the official website of the Turkish Grand National Assembly is a serious situation that should be evaluated separately in terms of freedom of the press, freedom of expression, disclosure of the legislative activities of MPs to the public and citizens' right to information."

Asking Minister Gürlek the reason for the decision and the request of which person or institution it was made, Çömez asked for the concrete statement or information used as a basis for blocking in the news to be disclosed. Çömez also asked how many news, internet addresses and social media posts were blocked within the scope of the same decision.

'WHY WERE ALL ACCOUNTS BLOCKED?'

Çömez stated that, according to public information, access to at least 250 'X' accounts was blocked on September 24 and at least 80 on September 26, and asked for these numbers to be verified. He asked how many of the decisions were based on the justification of "protection of national security and public order" in Article 8/A of Law No. 5651.

Çömez, who wants the posts that are used as a reason for completely blocking the accounts of journalists, academics, economists and lawyers to be explained; He also brought up the decisions regarding the accounts of economists Uğur Gürses, Veysel Ulusoy and Bilge Yılmaz. Çömez asked whether there is an objective criterion regarding the conditions under which evaluations regarding capital markets are considered a national security or public order problem.
