Microsoft adds Home, Code and Autopilot features to the Copilot platform, combining the artificial intelligence experience in a single interface

Microsoft aims to gather the artificial intelligence experience under a single roof with the comprehensive updates it brings to the Copilot platform. This new version includes Microsoft Copilot platform innovations that allow users to manage their daily tasks and long-term projects more efficiently.

The company states that these updates will make it easier for individuals and organizations to integrate artificial intelligence into their daily workflows. The update centers around three core abilities, each focusing on different types of work.

New features: Home, Code and Autopilot

The Home interface combines existing modes such as Chat and Cowork into a single starting point. Word, Excel and PowerPoint applications now work within this interface, allowing users to prepare documents without switching between applications.

Within these documents, Copilot is powered by Fabric IQ, which pulls context from more than 20 million semantic models built on Power BI. Edits made by colleagues or the AI ​​assistant are reflected in real-time, so progress on shared files stays in sync.

A new plugin registry system allows organizations to manage Microsoft, partner and custom-developed plugins from a single catalogue. With this new registration system, independent developers and partners can publish their plugins once for use on multiple Copilot surfaces.

The Code interface allows users without coding knowledge to define an app, tracking tool or dashboard and have them created automatically. This feature uses the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot and can be hosted within companies' own systems.

Continuous operation and management tools

Autopilot stands out as an agent that can constantly run in the background and complete repetitive tasks without waiting for a new instruction. Able to independently conduct tasks such as supplier reviews, multi-step processes, creating schedules and communicating with stakeholders.

Since it runs continuously on the cloud, work can continue even at night or when the user's attention shifts elsewhere. A related feature called Today, which will go into private preview in October, will summarize missed messages and pending tasks in emails and chats.

Microsoft also adds spending controls to these tools through a system it calls FinOps for AI. Thanks to this system, managers can track usage, set spending limits, and restrict which artificial intelligence models teams can use each month.

Daily tasks like quick responses or first drafts work through a flat-price subscription, while agent-based features are billed based on usage. Code, Cowork and Autopilot are included in this usage-based pricing model, along with the models Microsoft calls Astra and Fable.

Home and Code features are planned to be available through Microsoft's Frontier program in the coming weeks. Autopilot, on the other hand, will enter the private preview process by the end of the month.
