Migrants, Netherlands ready for transfers to Italy: Meloni's reply to Schlein

The Netherlands will proceed with the transfers of migrants to Italy in compliance with the rules of the Migration Pact, which came into force on 12 June. Anyone who entered before that date, however, will not be included in the measure. The Dutch media reported this, citing a spokeswoman for Asylum Minister Bart van den Brink. "We are starting from scratch," the minister said according to the AD newspaper. Van den Brink saw minister Matteo Piantedosi this week.

"Elly Schlein talks about "boomerangs" and an alleged failure of the government in the management of migrants. But before making propaganda it would be useful to know the difference between the issues being talked about. Schengen and the Pact on Migration and Asylum are two completely different things and have nothing to do with each other. And it is precisely the new Pact that marks a positive turning point for Italy in the management of the so-called 'Dublin-dwelling' migrants". Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote this on social media, highlighting that "the new rules protect the states of first entry much more in terms of asylum requests and, with the strengthening of the safe third country principle wanted by Italy, it will be easier to carry out accelerated repatriations".

"This government has opposed the application of senselessly penalizing rules for us and in fact, from 2023 to today, Italy has rejected around 80 thousand requests to take charge from other member states. And it is thanks to the firmness of this government that Italy has not limited itself to passively accepting everything that other states have asked of us. What would a left-wing government have done? It would probably have accepted those requests, further aggravating the pressure on our reception system and creating even more problems in management of migratory flows", underlines Meloni again.
