Minister of Industry expects meeting with US ambassador to discuss tariffs on Brazilian products

The Minister of Industry, Márcio Elias Rosa, said this Monday (14) that he hopes to meet at the end of the month with Ambassador Jamieson Greer, head of the United States Office of Commerce, to discuss the tariff on Brazilian products in force since July this year.

The meeting should take place during the meeting of G20 finance ministers, scheduled for September 30th to October 1st in Milwaukee, in the US state of Wisconsin. "Minister [of Foreign Affairs] Mauro Vieira and I will go to Milwaukee, and there we will most likely have a meeting with Ambassador Greer," said Elias Rosa.

He said that the meeting has been agreed with the Americans and that in the meantime the technical teams from both countries continue working normally. "Now we're just exchanging documents and moving forward with this next meeting."

The report asked the minister if he could detail the meeting's agenda points and whether there was already a draft agreement between the two countries, but he preferred not to answer.

The last meeting between Brazil and the USA to discuss pricing took place on August 31st. At the time, representatives of the Brazilian government told Americans that the treatment given to the country by the White House is unfair and discriminatory.

Márcio Elias Rosa and Mauro Vieira stated "that the Brazilian government does not agree with the unilateral measures imposed against the country, which are not compatible with multilateral trade rules", according to a note released by the Lula (PT) government.

There are two tariffs applied by the USA against Brazil. A first, 25%, for alleged unfair commercial practices. And a second, of 12.5%, for alleged failures in combating the import of products produced with forced labor – the latter replaced the global tariff of 10% that was in force until July.
