Munich selected as German Olympic candidate

After the decision in favor of Munich as the German Olympic candidate, Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his hope for the Olympic Games in Germany. “The Olympics belong in Germany,” he said. The whole of Germany is behind the application. “We want to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Games to us – for goosebumps, great successes, unforgettable moments and an entire country that is excited,” the CDU politician wrote on X.

Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) also spoke of a historic moment. Germany must now present itself together as one country. Munich's mayor Dominik Krause (Greens) was "infinitely" pleased and announced that he now wanted to "really get started."

Thomas Weikert, President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), said Munich won the national selection process with a concept that was most convincing for German sport. Now the next phase begins, to represent Germany in international competition. The President of the German Disabled Sports Association, Idriss Gonschinska, called for the strengths of sport to be pooled together for the application. Ronald Rauhe, Minister of State for Sports, also emphasized the support of the federal government.
