OpenAI announces ChatGPT for Teens version with safety mechanism for teens

OpenAI announces "ChatGPT for Teens" version, adding safety mechanisms and parental control features, to protect young users from AI risks.

According to the blog post, ChatGPT will automatically activate the teen version if it detects a user under 18 or when they self-report to be between 13 and 17 years old. The goal of the version is to encourage critical thinking and connect youth with real-life support solutions.

According to Reuters, as AI chatbots increasingly communicate naturally like humans, many companies promote their ability to act as "best friends", causing many users to depend on AI to relieve their emotions.

However, experts warn that relying on automated tools for mental health counseling poses dangers. Families of victims whose deaths were believed to be related to interactions with chatbots also sharply criticized the lack of safety barriers on AI platforms.

"We believe AI should open up educational opportunities. That's why ChatGPT for Teens is designed to support students outside of class, a time when direct help isn't always available, while keeping teens proactive and collaborative in the learning process," said an OpenAI representative.

The new version is equipped with many specialized modes such as learning mode, step-by-step thinking instructions instead of pre-given answers, reminders to do homework responsibly, or Test & Knowledge Visualization mode that provides various types of practice...

In addition, the system also has a series of features for parents such as allowing account linking, setting time, blocking access, sending notifications to parents in dangerous situations, such as conversations related to the risk of eating disorders, self-harm, emotional and romantic nature.

OpenAI said the new innovation will help parents be more proactive in managing their children's technology experiences, while ensuring AI serves as a healthy learning support tool instead of replacing real-life relationships.

According to Reuters, the above move took place in the context of artificial intelligence platforms receiving a wave of harsh criticism. In particular, OpenAI faces many lawsuits, accusing ChatGPT of harming children while the company is preparing for its initial public offering.
