Japan's PISA ranks first among OECD member countries in three major areas, maintaining the world's top level

On the 8th, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) announced the results of the International Academic Attainment Survey (PISA), which was conducted in 2025 on approximately 760,000 15-year-olds from 91 countries and regions. For the first time, Japan ranked first out of the 38 OECD member countries in all three major areas, and ranked 4th or 5th among all participating countries/regions, maintaining the world's top level.

While the average scores of participating countries continue to decline, Japan maintains a certain level over the medium term. Looking at all participating countries and regions, the ranking was 5th in "Scientific application ability" with 538 points (down 9 points from last time), 5th place in "mathematical application ability" with 525 points (down 11 points), and 4th place in "reading ability" with 503 points (down 13 points).

Japan also ranked first among OECD member countries (average score of 557 points) in ``Learning in the Digital World,'' an innovation field that uses programming tools and other tools. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology stated, ``Efforts to improve classes and create a digital learning environment based on the purpose of the current curriculum guidelines have borne fruit.''

On the other hand, in the field of reading comprehension, the percentage of correct answers to questions about quickly and accurately determining whether a short sentence makes sense or not decreased from the previous survey. The proportion of students with low scores in all three areas was increasing.

Comparing the results between men and women, the percentage of high-scoring students in both scientific application ability and mathematical application ability was higher for boys than for girls. In a survey of questions regarding enjoyment and interest in learning science, the percentage of positive responses was higher among boys.
