Police save newborn who choked on milk in Mato Grosso do Sul

A newborn baby, just 15 days old, was saved by military police after choking on milk, stopping breathing and starting to turn blue. The parents ran with João Vitor Pereira Ladislau to the headquarters of the 5th Independent Military Police Company (CIPM), which is close to the family home, looking for help.

The person who carried out the release maneuver was Lieutenant Ivan Llano. Father of a six-month-old baby, he said that, when he saw the newborn in his parents' arms, he immediately thought of his own daughter.

"The first feeling I had was nervousness. Even more so, when I saw the little baby there, I already imagined my little daughter. I have a six-month-old daughter now and I imagined how nervous the parents would be there," he said.

Despite the scare, the lieutenant said he tried to remain calm and put into practice what he learned during training. "We have to try to control our nervousness to carry out the procedures I learned during the courses. Try to remain calm, even in complicated situations, to resolve and carry out the choking maneuvers."

According to the Military Police, João Vitor had choked on milk. When they realized that their son was not breathing and was starting to turn blue, the parents decided to seek help at the barracks as it was close to where they live.

As soon as the family arrived, Ivan began the extrication maneuver, with the help of midshipman Amanda and soldier Arruda. The procedure was successful and the baby started breathing again.

At the same time, the police called the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu). A team went to the PM unit and continued to care for the newborn.
