Poll: Nearly 60% of Armenians Favor Referendum on EAEU Membership

YEREVAN, September 25. /TASS/. Nearly 60% of Armenian citizens surveyed favor holding a referendum on the country's membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), according to a poll presented by Gallup International.

"Some 38.9% stated that a referendum should definitely be held, while 20.3% said it likely should be. This means approximately 60% of citizens believe a referendum is necessary. Meanwhile, 9.3% of respondents felt a referendum likely should not be held, 25.1% stated it is definitely not needed, and 6.9% were undecided," Aram Navasardyan, head of Gallup International's Armenian branch, said during the presentation of the poll results.

He also noted that when choosing between Armenia's membership in the EAEU or the European Union, supporters of both paths were almost evenly split: 29.4% of citizens said the country should remain in the EAEU, while 35.1% favored moving toward EU membership. "Another 24.7% stated they would not vote, and 10.9% found it difficult to answer," Navasardyan reported.

The telephone poll of 1,001 respondents was conducted from September 22 to 24, with a margin of error of ±3%.

On March 26, 2025, the Armenian parliament passed a law initiating the process of the republic's accession to the EU. Russian President Vladimir Putin previously noted that EU integration would automatically terminate Armenia's cooperation with the EAEU and lead to the loss of all associated preferences. At the EAEU summit in Astana on May 29, the leaders of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan issued a joint statement backing a nationwide referendum in Armenia on whether to join the EU or remain in the EAEU.

On August 11, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin told TASS that Armenia needed to hold a nationwide referendum before December of this year, when potential steps regarding Yerevan will be discussed at a meeting of EAEU heads of state.

On August 24, Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, told TASS that Yerevan would never become an EU member but would instead severely damage its long-term relations with the EAEU and Moscow.
