Trams return to the overpass in Chorzów after the track renovation is completed

The flyover over the center of Chorzów has been closed since June 2025, when an expert opinion showed its very poor technical condition. Together with the flyover, the route running under it was also closed. Since May this year, after an additional expert opinion, traffic in front of the facility was gradually restored - first to pedestrians, and later to cars.

At the end of July, Tramwaje Śląskie began renovation of the track on the W5 section, i.e. the tram bridge structure adjacent to the main part of the flyover and running over the Katowice-Bytom railway line. The most important element of the work was sealing the tracks to limit water ingress and further damage to the structure.

The works have already been completed, so from Saturday the trams will run again via the flyover, on the section from ul. Krakusa to ul. Moniuszko.

Traffic on special terms

Tram traffic on the flyover will be managed under special rules. Trams will use one track, and only one train will be allowed on the facility at a time. The limitations result from the recommendations contained in the technical report and are intended to ensure safety.

The return of trams means regaining a direct connection between Bytom and Katowice. As Tramwaje Śląskie emphasizes, this will be the only means of public transport on this route that will not have to bypass the flyover. Line No. 6 will be served by low-floor trams, including vehicles from the latest delivery from Pesa Bydgoszcz.

What condition is the flyover in?

The flyover itself is still in poor technical condition. According to a supplementary expert opinion from April 2026, it is in a pre-failure state and can be used temporarily, for a maximum of five years. Further repairs and constant monitoring of the facility are necessary. Limited traffic of vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tons is also allowed - one lane in each direction - and single trams.

The authorities of Chorzów intend to dismantle the flyover in the future. They have not yet decided what communication system should replace it. They previously announced that they wanted to know the opinion of residents on this matter.

The flyover was built in the 1970s as a way to improve communication between Katowice and Bytom. Two two-lane viaducts were put into use in 1979. The solution improved traffic through the city, but at the same time significantly changed the appearance and functioning of the center of Chorzów. Ideas about its demolition have appeared before, but have not yet been implemented.
