British Prime Minister weighs options for long-term relations with the EU

During his speech on Tuesday at the Labor Party congress in Liverpool, the British head of government declared that he wants to present "different options" for long-term relations with the EU on the occasion of a summit meeting that should take place by the end of the year.

Questioned this Wednesday on BBC Radio 4, Burnham mentioned the possibility of maintaining the status quo, "if people consider it should remain that way", returning to the customs union, the single market, "or going all the way", that is, reincorporating into the EU.

Andy Burnham, who campaigned against Britain's departure from the EU in 2016, said on Tuesday that "Brexit has done more harm than good" to the country, particularly from an economic point of view.

In early June, before entering government, Burnham declared that she hopes the UK will rejoin the EU.

The Labor Party came to power in 2024 with a program that envisaged a rapprochement with the EU, but with three red lines: not returning to the customs union, the single market or reestablishing the free movement of people.

The EU-UK summit was initially scheduled for July, but was postponed due to the resignation that month of then-Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whom Burnham succeeded as party leader and head of Government.

One of the thorny topics of the next meeting will be the EU policy called 'Made in Europe', which aims to give priority to the alliance's companies and products in certain sectors. The UK wants the same treatment for its companies.
