Specialists from the "Remontowa" shipyard in Gdańsk, representatives of the shipowner and technical supervision inspectors are present on board "Bursztyn Unity" during sea trials. Their task is to thoroughly verify all systems and devices that are intended to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers and crew.
The start of sea trials is an important moment for the entire project. The stage of building and equipping the unit is behind us, and ahead of us is the verification of its capabilities in real operation conditions. It is also another step in the consistently implemented strategy of developing a modern ferry fleet that will serve connections on the Baltic Sea for many years to come - emphasized the president of POLSCA S.A., Paweł Pluto-Prądzyński.
A test for all systems
During cruises on the Bay of Gdańsk, which will last until October 8, "Bursztyn Unity" will not call at ports. During this time, experts will test the operation of all ship systems - from the main engines, through propulsion systems and maneuvering devices, to navigation, fire-fighting, electrical systems and ship automation. The ferry's maximum speed, maneuverability, stability and behavior in various operating conditions will also be checked.
According to POLSCA spokeswoman Sylwia Turkiewicz, the tests will also cover devices used to service passengers and transport vehicles. Sea trials are a mandatory stage of the shipbuilding process. Tests must confirm that it meets all technical and safety requirements and standards set by classification societies. If minor irregularities are detected, necessary device adjustments are made, Turkiewicz emphasizes.
Baptism and presentation for residents
The baptism of "Bursztyn Unity" is scheduled for November 11 in Szczecin. However, before the unit officially begins its service, it will be moored in front of Wały Chrobrego and open to visitors for about a week. This is a unique opportunity to see up close the most modern ferry in the Polish fleet.
"Bursztyn Unity" is the second in a series of three modern vessels built for Unity Line - the largest Polish ferry operator, which has been operating under the common POLSCA brand since 2026, after consolidation with Polferries. The construction of Ro-Pax (car and passenger) ferries is carried out as part of the government fleet modernization program initiated in 2017. The contract for three units was signed with the Gdańska Stocznia Remontowa in November 2021, and in 2025 the government allocated an additional PLN 1.3 billion to complete the project.
Impressive technical parameters
The new ferries, including "Bursztyn Unity", impress with their sizes and capabilities. They are almost 200 meters long and over 32 meters wide. The 4,100-meter long loading line allows for the simultaneous transport of over 250 trucks. There are 400 seats for passengers on board, and there is a cafeteria, bar and shop at their disposal. The crew consists of 50 people. Cruises from Świnoujście to Ystad and Trelleborg last less than 7 hours, which makes them one of the fastest and most comfortable connections on the Baltic Sea.
