Press review: the front pages of the newspapers of 7 September 2025

The front pages of Italian newspapers today 7 September 2025 are dominated by the AfD's beyond-predicted victory in the regional elections in Saxony-Anhalt. Corriere della Sera opens with the words of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz: "I'm voting shock, I'm not leaving", while Brussels remarks: "A threat, we must defend ourselves". La Repubblica headlines "Siege of Merz" and reports Russia's celebration: "Historic day", in addition to the interview with Romano Prodi who defines the vote as "an event of colossal importance, Europe in danger". La Stampa underlines the "Germany risk for Europe" and notes that the German economy is "slowing down" with a slowdown in industrial production and an increase in public debt. Il Messaggero speaks of a "Shock of Europe" and reports Russia's statements about "small progress" in the war in Ukraine, followed by threats to Norway.

Also highlighted is the feminicide of Lorena Isceri: according to the results of the autopsy reported by La Stampa, Il Messaggero and other newspapers, the woman was "thrown alive from the viaduct" or "from the overpass". The Ranucci case remains at the center of attention, with Massimo Lavitola's statements reported by various newspapers: from Corriere della Sera which cites his reference to a "social redemption", to La Repubblica and Il Fatto Quotidiano where he states "Ranucci was convenient for me" and "Friend of Ranucci only for my business", up to Il Giornale where he declared to prosecutors: "Bombs with good intentions to protect him from other attacks".

There is also space for Italian internal politics, with La Stampa reporting Giuseppe Conte "chasing dem votes" and the possibility of primaries, otherwise "my people will spit on me". Emma Bonino's emergency hospitalization in Rome is reported by La Repubblica.

On the international front, we note the continuation of talks between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US envoys, described as "there is progress" by Corriere della Sera. Il Sole 24 Ore instead opens on the "record prices" of agricultural raw materials and on short-term rentals in large cities under "European pressure", as well as reporting on the operations of Italian companies in Mercosur countries and the recapitalization plan in China with 45 billion in bonds.

In the sports section, La Gazzetta dello Sport celebrates Kimi Antonelli, new Formula 1 world champion, while Corriere dello Sport and Tuttosport focus on the match between Inter and Real Madrid at the Bernabéu, defined as the "Real exam" for the Nerazzurri, with Mourinho and Chivu as protagonists. Also noteworthy is Mourinho's return to the Bernabéu amid emotions and memories of the Treble, the wait for Napoli with De Bruyne, and the December party in Imola for Antonelli. At home Juventus is dominated by Locatelli's meniscus injury, while Boga suffers from a muscle problem. Tennis sees Sinner expected in Turin.

Finally, we note the diesel spill in the Navigli in Milan, with a 28 km long slick coming from the Magenta area, which passed the barriers and reached some areas.
