RB Leipzig loses its opening game in the Champions League against Como 1907 1:4

The backdrop was fantastic, the game was a nightmare: RB Leipzig had no chance at times against upstart Como 1907 and started the Champions League again with a defeat. On the shores of Lake Como, the Italian newcomer, who was fourth-rate seven years ago, was unstoppable and secured a 4-1 (2-0) victory against the Bundesliga club thanks to goals from Martin Baturina (15th minute), Tasos Douvikas (38th), Assane Diao (54th) and Maximo Perrone (90th). Andrija Maksimovic (58th) only scored a consolation goal.

In its previous participation in the Champions League, Leipzig had already remained without points after the first matchday of the league phase. In the end, the club only recorded one win from eight games and was eliminated. Due to the second defeat in a row, on Saturday they lost 1:3 in Bremen, the pressure on the new coach Martin Demichelis is growing.

Demichelis' demand falls flat

The Argentine had demanded a reaction from his team - but it initially failed to materialize. Como dictated the action and was in control at almost every point in the first half. Demichelis wanted to put the premier class newcomer under pressure with more possession of the ball, but he lacked passing speed, coordination and intensity. At the break, Leipzig only had 40 percent possession of the ball and Demichelis' handwriting was barely visible.

Como was simply better and after twelve minutes Maarten Vandevoordt had to save against Douvikas for the first time in desperate need. However, the Greek was offside during the action. Three minutes later, Baturina won the ball on the halfway line and sent Douvikas on. The striker pushed the ball flat into the penalty area, where Ridle Baku cleared it right into the feet of the outstanding Baturina - 0:1.

Douvikas increases ice cold

Leipzig initially avoided further damage, then had a good phase after half an hour. But the Saxons missed the great double chance to equalize. Jean Butez brilliantly saved the shot from Andrija Maksimovic, who had moved into the starting line-up, and Marc Guiu missed with a header from close range straight after.

Como increased the intensity again and posed problems for Leipzig. Baturina broke away in his own half with a simple body deception and played a precise ball into the path of Douvikas. RB defense chief Willi Orban had canceled the offside, the attacker ran alone towards Vandevoordt and finished with strong nerves. Leipzig was knocked out, but made it into the break without conceding another goal.

The first counterattack is right

Leipzig came out of halftime more confident on the ball and more decisive, while Como dropped a little deeper. However, the first counterattack was right away. Playmaker Nico Paz sent Diao, who was running with him, over the right side, and the Senegalese hit the ball from a tight angle into the far corner. A few minutes later, Vandevoordt was already beaten after another counterattack, but Como captain Lucas Da Cunha put the ball next to the empty goal from ten meters.

Then suddenly Leipzig was there. Christopher Nkunku played across the penalty area, Maksimovic hit the corner in a remarkable way. Demichelis brought in three new players in Assan Ouédraogo, Tidiam Gomis and Ezechiel Banzuzi. Como increasingly left the game to Leipzig, but Leipzig was no longer in great danger.
