Russia Tells Armenia to Choose Between EAEU and EU Membership

MOSCOW, September 24. /TASS/. Russia respects Armenia’s sovereign rights but Yerevan should choose between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the European Union (EU) for membership as the standards of the two associations are incompatible with each other, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at a news briefing.

"We respect all sovereign rights of Armenia, but at the same time Armenia has been a participant in the EAEU integration process and a gradual shift toward alternative standards will not be compatible with the EAEU’s standards across a variety of fields," Peskov noted. "This is what we mean when we say how important it is to make a choice," he explained.

"What is very important is that one EAEU member country does not conflict with the rules, norms and principles of this integration association, which is very important to all of us," the Russian presidential spokesman argued.
