Methane gas release during ground survey in Samsun

During the ground survey drilling carried out in the Doğu Park location of Canik district, gas emissions were noticed 5 days ago at a depth of approximately 40 meters.

Thereupon, security measures in the region were increased and the work area was taken under control. Methane gas, which is said to have reached 90 percent purity, has also caused concern in the environment.

Following the gas leak in the area where Atatürk Boulevard, with thousands of vehicles in front of it, passes, and where hundreds of people picnic, especially on weekends, AFAD and fire brigade teams are on rotation 24 hours a day in the region.

It was stated that expert teams are expected to arrive from Ankara and the region will be secured after the work to be carried out.

Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Faculty of Engineering, Department of Environmental Engineering, Lecturer Prof. Dr. Bahtiyar Öztürk said, "When methane gas mixes with air, it becomes flammable at a certain rate. There is air and oxygen, but methane molecules are sparse. When a molecule burns, the spark must ignite the molecule next to it. When the molecules are very sparse, this does not happen and ignition does not occur again."
