Sanya Develops Diversified, Year-Round Tourism System with Enhanced Safety and Accessibility

The resort city of Sanya located on the southern coast of Hainan Island in South China has developed a new, more diversified system for a comfortable seaside vacation in recent years, the Sanya Ribao newspaper reported.

According to the newspaper, local authorities and businesses have managed not only to diversify tourism products, but also to make them safer and more accessible. As a result, visitors from around the world can now "immerse themselves more deeply" in the beach vacation atmosphere in Sanya.

In particular, Sanya’s tourism sector has started using its resources more efficiently thanks to the introduction of innovations and better service quality. By seeking to give visitors as many unforgettable experiences as possible and constantly updating its tourism products, the city has overcome seasonal limitations and secured a year-round flow of tourists.

Among beach activities that usually attract visitors, surfing is becoming increasingly popular, including sessions with certified instructors. Tourists are showing greater interest in relatively affordable yacht trips on rented vessels and diving, which is available to both beginners and professionals, who prefer deeper dives. Marine tourism in Sanya has become much more active and personalized, the newspaper stressed. Popular activities include sea fishing, visiting scenic spots at sunset, family parties and photo shoots.

Amid the growing tourist flow, the government regularly conducts special inspections and provides standardized oversight, checking equipment quality, staff qualifications, service standards and safety measures. Relevant agencies provide comprehensive support to Sanya’s tourism sector in accordance with new rules approved by the local administration that took effect on May 1.

Sanya is China’s leading resort city, with a population of more than 1.1 million. Its gross regional product exceeded 103 billion yuan (about $15 billion) in 2025, up 4.8%. The average annual temperature is 25.4 degrees Celsius, while its coastline stretches for about 260 km. The surrounding waters are home to 19 bays and roughly 40 islands suitable for tourism, providing favorable conditions for yachting, cruise tourism, beach vacations and family travel. Last year, the number of foreign tourists visiting the city increased by 41.4%, reaching more than 1 million.
