Investigation into the failure of railway traffic control devices in Katowice

On Thursday, the Katowice Południe District Prosecutor's Office announced the initiation of an investigation into Wednesday's failure of railway traffic control devices at the Katowice station.

According to the deputy district prosecutor, Prosecutor Dawid Szulik, two Polish citizens, aged 50, were detained and may be related to the case.

Actions with the detainees will be carried out on Friday, announced prosecutor Szulik.

According to RMF FM reporter Marcin Buczek, the first man was detained last night, the second one this morning.

The investigation is being carried out for an attack on infrastructure facilities, in accordance with Art. 254a of the Penal Code. Those detained had previously been convicted of crimes against property.

For the alleged act, they face from 6 months to 8 years in prison.

As a result of Wednesday's failure of the SRK devices (railway traffic control system), traffic at the Katowice station was completely suspended from 3:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.

Until 11:00, trains ran with significant restrictions. As a result, as many as 649 trains were delayed for a total of over 13,000 minutes, or 21 hours. 76 trains were cancelled, including 44 on the entire route and 32 on part of the route.
