Strömsund Bridge damaged by heavy vehicle - traffic diverted

Before 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, there was an alarm that the Strömsund Bridge had moved laterally up to 50 centimeters and vertically almost as much, according to Räddningsregion Mittnorrland. This after a heavy goods vehicle with entourage tried to cross the bridge, but was stopped.

The assessment is that the bridge structure will not collapse, but that it needs to be repaired for a preliminary period of one month, the Swedish Transport Administration announces.

The Strömsund Bridge has been subject to maintenance work since 2021, and this summer it would have been finished, reported Östersunds-Posten. New cables and concrete pillars would allow the cable-stayed bridge's 182-metre span to support vehicles weighing up to 74 tonnes.

For the time being, it is not clear whether the weight of the trucks in question exceeded the maximum load capacity. The police tell Östersunds-Posten that they are there to stop any unauthorized persons from the place where the rescue service and others are working.

The Swedish Transport Administration's announcement about traffic stoppages on the bridge comes with information on how the traffic is diverted. For E45 road users heading north, choose road 795 from Hallviken towards road 345 in the direction of Ulriksfors, and vice versa for those traveling south.
