Tragedy at Fincantieri in Ancona: one worker dead and one seriously injured due to a blaze

A dead worker and another in very serious conditions are the tragic outcome of an accident at work which occurred in the late evening of September 29th in the Fincantieri factory in Ancona.

The deceased worker was 55 years old, of Tunisian origins, a family man who died due to the burns he suffered. He arrived at the hospital in desperate conditions and didn't make it. The injured boy, on the other hand, is 29 years old, of Bangladeshi origin, also a father of two children, and was transferred from the regional hospital in Ancona to the major burns center in Pisa in very serious conditions.

Around 10.15pm the two workers, employed in a contracting company, were hit by a flame while working on a ship inside a shed.

Polmare is trying to reconstruct the exact dynamics of the accident. Firefighters and police cars also attended the scene. Investigations are also underway by the scientific police to ascertain what happened and in particular the cause of the lethal blaze, perhaps triggered by a spark during cutting with a torch and acetylene.

The Fiom, Fim and Uilm unions, protesting in front of the plant, have proclaimed an eight-hour strike. «Stop dying while working - the unions write - it is no longer acceptable that fatal accidents continue to occur in our country without anything changing. We need to change the culture of safety, which is too often considered exclusively a business cost. Investments are necessary, particularly in training but also in providing the best prevention and protection devices, in order to avoid further tragedies."
