8-point memorandum from the Trump-Chi summit: Artificial intelligence and Iran message

The two countries published an 8-article memorandum of understanding as a result of the Trump-Xi summit.

Accordingly, the parties agreed to initiate an artificial intelligence dialogue between the two countries, the first round of which will be held in November, and to establish a communication channel for artificial intelligence-related accidents in this context.

Artificial intelligence was one of the important topics of the summit. The economic delegations of the two countries, who held talks in New York before the summit, reported that they agreed to initiate an "artificial intelligence dialogue" that includes information sharing against the risks posed by artificial intelligence and early warning of possible threats.

Differences in approach, with the United States focusing on controlling risks to artificial intelligence security and China advocating the creation of a more comprehensive global artificial intelligence management, have prevented a dialogue to continue until now.

Warnings to Iran

On the other hand, the memorandum included two articles concerning Iran. Trump and Xi stated that they agreed that Iran should fulfill its obligation not to develop nuclear weapons and that no country or institution should charge transit fees through international waterways.

The war in the Middle East and the Iran issue were one of the important agenda items of the summit held in Washington. The economic effects of the disruption caused by the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical transit route for global energy trade, continue to be felt at the global level. There is a possibility that the disruption in energy transportation will also spread to the Babulmandeb Strait, as the Iranian-backed Houthis, who are fighting with government forces in Yemen, capture the settlements on the Red Sea coast.

Trump and Xi will meet again at APEC and G20 summits

During the visit, Trump expressed his intention to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit to be hosted by China in November, and Xi expressed his intention to attend the Group of 20 (G20) Summit to be hosted by the USA in December.

The US and Chinese militaries agreed to strengthen crisis communication and prevention mechanisms.

While the leaders commemorated the alliance between the United States and China in the Second World War, the armies of the two countries stated that they would continue to cooperate in the search for the remains of missing American soldiers in China.
