Two men were arrested after climbing out of New York City's sewer system near Central Park

On Wednesday, two men climbed out of New York's sewer system next to Central Park in Manhattan. Police managed to track down the men and were able to arrest them a few hours later, as the number plates on their vehicles were caught on a surveillance camera.

This may mean that a strange phenomenon that eluded the New York police has been solved. Since May, videos have been published of people going down the city's 1,200-mile sewer system in the middle of the night. The police have so far failed to arrest any suspect, while the perpetrators' motives have been shrouded in obscurity.

Authorities and police in New York have warned of several dangers that could lurk in the tunnels where sewage and rainwater from the city run, while also expressing concern that the phenomenon will attract copycats.

According to the police, it is unclear whether the men who were arrested on Wednesday are guilty of having climbed into the drain on other occasions as well. In questioning, the men, who are suspected of illegal trespassing, say that on Wednesday night they were looking for valuables, according to the New York police, according to NBC.

"They basically both described climbing down into the sewer system together to look for valuables that were washed away in drains and drains," authorities said.
