Two dead, four injured in Western Highway crash near Ledcourt, Victoria

Two people have died and another is fighting for life after a horror crash in Victoria's north-west on last night.

Victoria Police said a vehicle was travelling along the Western Highway near Mount Drummond Road at Ledcourt around 6:45pm when two cars collided.

"The car has collided into the side of a truck and then collided with a third vehicle, being another car," detective acting sergeant Leigh Miller from the Major Collision Unit said.

"Sadly two people in the third vehicle are both deceased."

The victims are yet to be formally identified.

He said four people were in the other car, including a young girl who was critically injured.

The other three were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the truck was unhurt and stopped at the scene.

Roads around the area have reopened after remaining closed in both directions overnight while detectives investigated the cause of the crash.

"At this stage we don't know why the collision has occurred but what we will be investigating is whether fatigue or distraction, [or] whether speed is involved," detective acting sergeant Miller said.

"It's the holiday period. It was getting late in the afternoon, traffic was really busy, people were heading home.

"We want to make sure that everyone gets home safely … Two people aren't going home and it's a sad and tragic event."
