Flooding in Bangkok affects international air traffic

The severe flooding in Bangkok is also disrupting international air traffic. The Thai airline Thai Airways announced that it would have to cancel more than a dozen flights by Wednesday. In addition to domestic connections, several international connections are also affected, including to Frankfurt and Munich.

However, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports remain open. However, due to flooding and traffic problems, travelers must expect significant delays.

The Thai aviation authority CAAT called on passengers to check their flight status before traveling to the airport and to allow significantly more time for the journey. Arriving passengers reported to the German Press Agency that they had to use public transport to get to the hotel because there were only a few taxis.

Ground handling in Suvarnabhumi was particularly affected. Flooded roads made it difficult for airport workers to reach the airport. As a result, there were bottlenecks in baggage handling and a large backlog. There were also problems with aircraft circulation due to the floods.

Thai Airways deployed additional staff to sort and deliver abandoned suitcases. According to media reports, soldiers also supported baggage handling.

Hundreds of thousands affected by floods

The floods hit the mega-metropolis of Bangkok badly after days of heavy rain. According to the city administration, around 329,000 households or around 700,000 people in various parts of the city were affected.

The rain has now let up. Authorities tried to drain water from flooded streets and residential areas. Nationwide, more than 576,000 households with around 1.79 million people were recently affected by floods, the authorities announced. According to civil protection, at least eight people have died as a result of the floods since mid-September.
