Unicamp discusses the feasibility of a medical course in Piracicaba

Unicamp confirmed, in a note sent to g1 last week, that conversations are underway to facilitate the creation of the medicine course in Piracicaba (SP).

The matter came to light on Wednesday (9), during a city hall meeting with representatives from the Government of São Paulo, USP and Unicamp itself to discuss the creation of the Piracicaba Innovation District.

In the report, the director of the Unicamp campus in Piracicaba, professor Karina Gonzales Silvério, highlighted that the creation of the medicine course in Piracicaba, as well as other undergraduate courses, depends on the implementation of a project to autonomousize the university's health area.

"With the progress of this autarchization project, it frees up resources within Unicamp that will make it possible to expand the offering of undergraduate courses, including medicine here in Piracicaba", he highlighted.

Because of this, there is still no deadline for these new courses to be created nor the total number of places they will offer.

g1 also asked Piracicaba City Hall for more details on the project, which informed that only Unicamp could comment on the matter.

Piracicaba Innovation District

Wednesday's meeting served to define how the project for the implementation of the Innovation District in Piracicaba will progress.

A state law establishes requirements for an innovation district to be recognized by the State, including: the existence of anchor organizations, defined area, implementation plan and annual accountability.

“With the participation of USP and Unicamp alongside the State and the municipality, Piracicaba now has four anchor institutions, when the minimum required by state policy is two”, says the city hall.

In view of this, the municipal administration mentions that the next steps of the project are the definition of the district's governance and the elaboration of the implementation plan, both also foreseen in state policy.

At the same time, the city hall intends to finalize the Municipal Sustainable Development System (Simdes), which is a bill that brings together incentives and gives the district a legal basis. This project is expected to be filed with the City Council in October this year.
