Green light for Return to Camelot, the far right rally in Pietramurata

Return to Camelot, the international gathering of the far right organized by Veneto Fronte Skinheads, will take place. The provincial committee for public order and safety of Trento has decided not to block the event, which will take place from 3 to 6 September in Pietramurata, in the municipality of Dro, Trentino. Therefore, the controversies that have been accompanying the approach of the event for days now continue, opposed by opposition parties, associations and trade unions, who denounce its unconstitutionality.

The gathering, which includes concerts, conferences and book and music stands, will be held on private land, at the Ciclamino hotel. At the end of the summit that gave the OK to the demonstration, the prefect of Trento Isabella Fusiello announced that, in order to manage public order and safety outside the hotel facility, «interventions were requested from the staff of the state police, the carabinieri and the financial police». Furthermore, as Fusiello explained, the presence of Digos personnel and related departments is also expected inside the hotel "precisely to verify their behaviour, which if it turns out to be of criminal importance will be reported to the judicial authorities".

On the sidelines of the meeting, the commissioner Nicola Zupo added that it is estimated that the event will bring together 300 or 400 people at most and that from the evening of September 2nd until the 6th, 120-140 men will be deployed, also in anticipation of the protest procession scheduled for Thursday the 3rd: «These men were asked not only to avoid clashes but also so that the instructions that will be issued by the police commissioner are respected by those who participate in the gathering».

At the end of the Committee meeting, the mayor of Dro Ginetta Santoni declared that «unfortunately we found ourselves having to manage this situation that we did not want. We don't share the spirit of the demonstration and we're sorry that Pietramurata has to become a meeting place for extremists and be locked down." However, the mayor also expressed confidence in the ability of provincial institutions to ensure that excessive disorder is avoided: "I am convinced that the authorities will be able to guarantee safety for citizens."

Even the mayor of Trento Franco Ianeselli had firmly condemned Return to Camelot on 31 August, recalling that «Veneto Fronte Skinhead is one of the oldest neo-fascist and supremacist organizations in Italy». Ianeselli also underlined the incompatibility of the far right rally with the presence of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, who will be in Trentino during the days of the event for the celebrations of the eightieth anniversary of the agreement that led to the autonomy of the province. «As the historian Francesco Filippi wrote, one of two things: either the Nazi-fascist party is legitimized or the anti-fascist party of autonomy is celebrated, the result of democracy and freedom conquered thanks to the partisan Resistance. The two things cannot go together" Ianeselli stated.
