Another worker rescued alive from hydroelectric tunnel in Nepal

During rescue work after the severe flood disaster in Nepal, another worker was rescued alive from a hydropower tunnel. A Chinese citizen was rescued from a tunnel at the Trishuli Hydropower Project, the Nepalese Prime Minister's Office said on Saturday.

This brings the number of workers rescued alive to three. Emergency services had already rescued two Nepalese workers from a tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydroelectric power plant on Friday.

According to the Nepalese army, the man was rescued from a 225-meter-long tunnel by a joint rescue team of Nepali soldiers and South Korean disaster management experts. He was then medically examined. Army images showed the rescued man being flown out by helicopter while a military medic checked his health.

Authorities believe that around 900 workers at twelve hydropower projects in Nepal are still missing. Around 500 of them are said to be trapped in various tunnels.

According to authorities, the devastating floods on August 26th were probably caused by the collapse of a glacier. According to the Nepalese disaster management agency, at least 1,300 people were killed. More than 5,000 others are still missing.
