Xi Jinping on state visit to the USA: "China and the United States must be partners, not adversaries"

I am pleased to pay a state visit to the United States at the invitation of President Donald Trump. On behalf of the Chinese people, I extend my sincere greetings and best wishes to the American people. President Xi Jinping stated this in a note released after his arrival in Washington from Beijing diplomacy. China and the United States "are both great nations," with "great people." The two countries "should be partners, not adversaries" and the "great rebirth of the Chinese nation and America's return to greatness can be achieved simultaneously, mutually beneficial and for the benefit of the whole world."

The people of China and the US "have a long history of friendly exchanges and their interests are deeply interconnected", adds Xi. "This year is crucial for the development of both China and the United States. During President Trump's visit to China in May, we agreed to build a constructive and stable strategic relationship" between the two countries, "providing strategic guidance for the future development of Sino-US relations."

Both sides "should come together, promote the formation of a stable relationship characterized by cooperation as a fundamental pillar, moderate competition, manageable differences and a promising future of peace, and chart a correct path for the coexistence of the two great powers in the new era. I am confident of this", Xi further observes.

The world evolves and times change, "but the historical logic of peaceful coexistence between China and the United States remains unchanged, the goodwill of the two peoples towards friendly exchanges remains unchanged, and the general expectations of the international community towards China and the United States remain unchanged", adds the Chinese president, convinced that "this visit will certainly achieve fruitful results, improve the well-being of the peoples of both countries and instill hope for world peace".
