West Nile Virus Report in Greece: High Risk in Attica and Thessaloniki

In EODY's weekly epidemiological surveillance report, it was stated that high-risk municipalities were concentrated especially around Attica and Thessaloniki.

The report noted that the municipalities of Iraklio, Nea Smirni, Paleo Faliro, Nea Filadelfia, Nea Halkidona, Dafni, Imittos and Nikea and Rendis in Attica were among the high-risk areas, while the municipalities of Neapoli, Sikies, Pavlos Melas, Oreokastro, Pilea and Hortiatis around Thessaloniki were included in the list.

EODY stated that there have been no West Nile Virus cases in these municipalities yet this year, but the risk is high due to the cases in the surrounding regions and geographical and epidemiological data.

West Nile virus is transmitted to humans mostly through the bite of infected mosquitoes.

In the data published yesterday, EODY reported that 26 new West Nile virus cases were detected in Greece between 18-24 September and 3 people died.

It was stated that from the beginning of this year until September 24, the number of cases in the country increased to 396 and the number of deaths due to the virus increased to 36.
