The Yankees lost to the Rays 0:1. Wells’ base-running error after a long hit became the key

[Sports Center/Comprehensive Report] Today in G1 of the American League Division Series, the Yankees were blocked by Rays ace Drew Rasmussen's 10K scoreless and high-quality pitching in 8 innings. They were even held without a hit until catcher Austin Wells hit a long hit in the 8th inning. However, Wells made a serious base-running error after the hit and was out in front of third base, which also caused the Yankees to lose 0:1.

With two outs in the 8th inning, the Yankees relied on Wells' long hit to end the hit drought. However, when he rushed to third base, he was stabbed out, which instantly dampened the Yankees' counterattack momentum. Rasmussen's 7.2 hitless innings set a new record for the longest playoff run in Rays history. In the end, the Yankees only managed one hit in the game and were shutout by the Rays.

Wells restored the moment after the game and said that he originally thought that the ball would bounce back even harder after hitting the right field wall, but Rays right fielder Victor Mesa Jr. handled it very quickly, "With 1 out at the time, we wanted to actively create opportunities and play more aggressively when there was little progress in the game. Of course, it would be better if we could get on base safely or stand on second base that time."

Well said frankly: "In that moment, you have to take a risk, and although it was obviously a mistake, I can't tell you if I had it to do over again, whether I would rush to third base, because the situation would be different. But obviously, I took a risk and failed in the end, but in that situation, you have to try to do something."

"Obviously, that was not a good choice." Yankees head coach Aaron Boone said bluntly after the game, "I'm not sure what he found while running the bases that made him want to rush to third base, but it was obviously a wrong judgment." Boone also admitted that the Yankees were blocked by Rasmussen throughout the game today. Wells was one of the few hitters who could hit the ball solidly, but the overall line was never able to connect effectively.
