The Russian Ambassador to Georgia stated that Tbilisi’s statements are insufficient for reconciliation with South Ossetia

Russian Ambassador to Georgia Marat Kulakhmetov said that public statements by the Georgian leadership are not yet enough for reconciliation with South Ossetia.

The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that early presidential elections in South Ossetia allegedly contradict the fundamental norms and principles of international law.

In the early presidential elections in South Ossetia, held on September 18, Marat Kambolov became the elected head of the republic, receiving 84.95% of the votes.

MOSCOW, September 26 – RIA Novosti. Public statements by the Georgian leadership indicate that there are no prospects for reconciliation with South Ossetia, Russian Ambassador to the Republic Marat Kulakhmetov told RIA Novosti.

Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia stated that the early presidential elections in South Ossetia that took place on September 18 and their conduct allegedly contradict the fundamental norms and principles of international law.

Answering the question under what scenario is it possible to use it between Georgia and South Ossetia, Kulakhmetov emphasized that it is premature to talk about this.

“It is not yet possible to talk about reconciliation between Georgia and South Ossetia, given the public statements of the Georgian authorities,” he said.

Early presidential elections in South Ossetia took place on September 18. Marat Kambolov became the elected head of the republic. He won with a large lead over his rivals, gaining 84.95% of the votes.

On August 8, 2008, Georgian troops attacked South Ossetia, many of whose residents already had Russian citizenship. In response, Moscow was forced to carry out a military operation, as a result of which the Georgian military was forced out of the republic five days later. On August 26, 2008, the Russian Federation recognized the sovereignty of South Ossetia, as well as another former Georgian autonomy - Abkhazia; Nicaragua, Venezuela, and a number of other states followed the Russian example.
