Unknown persons painted over the name of Moscow on road signs on the A12 highway in the Rezekne area, reports the LSM portal.

The Latgale police confirmed information about damage to someone else's property and opened a criminal case.

MOSCOW, September 26 – RIA Novosti. Unknown persons erased the name of Moscow from road signs in Latvia, writes the LSM portal.

“On the A12 highway in the Rezekne area, several painted over road signs were noticed, hiding indications of the Russian cities of Moscow and Ostrov,” the material says.

The Latgale police confirmed to the portal information about damage to other people's property.

“A criminal case was initiated under Article 185, Part 1 of the Criminal Code, concerning the intentional destruction or damage of someone else’s property,” the law enforcement officers said in a commentary.

An investigation has been launched; the Latvian State Security Service has refrained from commenting on this issue.

In June, the Latvian government failed to convince the public of the need to remove the names of Russian and Belarusian cities from road signs.

There are 235 signs and information road signs with the names of settlements in Russia and Belarus installed on the national road network of Latvia, and another 83 on the municipal road network.
