A letter seen by AFP on the 7th showed that French President Macron has sent a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, requesting him to submit a "European legislative text" to prohibit children under 15 from using social media to protect all children in the EU.

According to a report by Agence France-Presse, France’s Constitutional Council rejected a proposal in August to ban children under 15 from using social media. In this regard, Macron reiterated that he hopes to find "feasible solutions" by amending domestic laws in the next few months and ensure that the new laws are consistent with EU law and the French Constitution.

Macron said in a letter to von der Leyen on August 29 that it is now "necessary to take further action" to achieve consistency among EU countries by formulating new European-level regulations.

It is worth noting that since Australia issued a social media ban on December 10, 2025, prohibiting children under the age of 16 from using social media, many countries have followed up or implemented similar measures.
