The Taipei City Health Bureau announced today (23rd) the results of pesticide residue inspections on fresh fruits and vegetables. A total of 51 fruit and vegetable products were randomly inspected in July, and the inspection results were that 16 products did not comply with regulations. The illegal items included 4 pieces of "lychees"; 3 pieces of "baicai"; 2 pieces of "peas"; and 1 piece each of "nine-story pagoda", "Qingjiang cabbage", "Qingjiang cabbage", "rapeseed", "cantaloupe", "white radish" and "cilantro". Each of the detected 1 to 7 residual pesticides did not comply with the "Pesticide Residue Allowance Standard".

The Health Bureau has ordered the sampling locations to remove illegal products from the shelves. If the source of the product is traced to other counties or cities, it has been transferred to the Health Bureau under its jurisdiction. If the source is Taipei City, if the violation is confirmed after investigation, the violation will be dealt with according to the provisions of the Food Safety and Hygiene Management Act.

The Health Bureau mentioned that it has also notified Taipei Agricultural Products Transportation and Marketing Co., Ltd. to stop supplying the product name and code to farmers who violate the rules for 10 days based on the key points for inspection and handling of pesticide residues and additives in incoming fruits and vegetables. For the first violation, the case will be recorded to strengthen random inspections; The second time the supply was suspended for one month; the third time the supplier's qualification to supply the product name and code of the unqualified fruits and vegetables was revoked. During the suspension period, the same ID card number and the same product name and code will not be available, and the inspection of suppliers of fruits and vegetables and substandard products entering the market will be strengthened.

The Health Bureau stated that any residual pesticide content that does not meet the "Pesticide Residue Allowance Standard" violates Article 15, Paragraph 1, Paragraph 5 of the Food Safety and Hygiene Management Act, "Residual pesticide or animal drug content exceeds the safe allowable amount" and shall be subject to the same law. According to Article 44, Paragraph 1, Paragraph 2, the responsible operator may be fined not less than NT$60,000 but not more than NT$200 million; if the source cannot be explained, the seller may be fined not less than NT$30,000 but not more than NT$3 million in accordance with Article 47 of the same law.
