Academician Xu Xing, Director of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chairman of the Chinese Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, delivered a speech on behalf of the organizers. He reviewed the significant progress made in the fields of vertebrate paleontology and paleoanthropology in China over the past two years and believed that the output of these breakthrough results fully demonstrated the vigorous development of vertebrate paleontology and paleoanthropology in China.
Xu Xing said that Hami was the choke point of the middle route of the Silk Road, and the Bronze Age archaeological discoveries represented by Yanbulak Cemetery have been famous in the academic world since the 20th century. In 2005, academician Qiu Zhanxiang and researcher Wang Banyue of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, identified pterosaurs from broken bones in Hami, kicking off the research of Hami, a world-class fossil treasure house.
