A 1974 work by Nouvelle Vague director Jacques Rivette... Screened domestically for the first time in 52 years

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Park Won-hee = The film 'Celine and Julie Go Boating' (1974), directed by Jacques Rivette, a representative figure of the Nouvelle Vague, will be released in Korea for the first time in 52 years.

Distributor Lighthouse will present ‘Celine and Julie Go Boating’ in theaters nationwide on the 30th.

'Celine and Julie Go to the Boat' depicts the bizarre adventures of librarian Julie (Dominique Labourier) and magician Céline (Juliet Berto) who works at a cheap club.

The movie begins with a chance meeting between Julie and Celine. Julie hears about the house where Celine worked as a nanny and heads there. Julie goes into the mansion and comes out with no memory of what happened.

Julie eats the candy in her pocket and remembers the incident at the mansion, but her memory is incomplete. Julie and Celine begin to intervene in the case by going in and out of the mansion to find out the whole story.

The film, which deviates from the existing familiar narrative structure, takes on a unique atmosphere by mixing reality and fantasy. The narrative of characters intervening in a fictional story while crossing reality and fiction is reminiscent of director David Lynch's 'Mulholland Drive' (2001). In fact, the Lincoln Center Film Society, a film institution in New York, USA, introduced 'Mulholland Drive' and 'Celine and Julie Go Boating' at a special exhibition screening Lynch's and Rivette's works side by side in 2015.

The film received a special jury award at the 27th Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland held in 1974.

Rivette is a French film critic and director. As a master director of the Nouvelle Vague movement who led the innovation movement in the film industry along with Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut, he has created experimental works.
