Canadian Prime Minister Carney becomes favorite for Nobel Peace Prize and Time Person of the Year for standing up to Trump

The Associated Press reports that Canadian Prime Minister Carney has become famous for his courage to stand up to U.S. President Trump. If prediction market traders are correct, Carney may win the Nobel Peace Prize at the end of this year and become Time magazine's Person of the Year in 2026, making Trump furious.

Carney was once the favorite to win the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on the US prediction market platform Kalshi on Monday, with traders betting that his chances of winning the prize were 14%, but the odds have since dropped.

There is currently no public evidence that Carney is on the Nobel Committee's secret selection list. The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on October 9 in Oslo, Norway.

Still, rumors that Carney might win the honor reflect the significance of his surge in popularity: that middle powers should unite to defend their sovereignty at a time when powerful powers are increasingly using their economic and military influence.

Whether this stance resonates with the Nobel Committee is unknown, but one thing is certain: the Nobel Peace Prize and Time Magazine Person of the Year are exactly two honors that Trump covets.

Carney and Trump are locked in an escalating trade war, with both sides imposing 50% tariffs on billions of dollars of each other's products. Trump warned Carney to "comply" or face consequences far worse than existing tariffs.

Trump, who has twice been named Time magazine's Person of the Year, has repeatedly complained about not receiving the Nobel Prize. In July this year, he said that he "deserved this award more than anyone." Nelson Wiseman, an emeritus professor at the University of Toronto, said, "No matter who wins the Nobel Prize, Trump will be unhappy, and if Carney wins the prize, it will make the relationship between the two countries even more tense than it is now."

Carney also has a good chance of being honored by Time magazine. The magazine has listed him as one of the 100 most influential people in 2026, and specifically emphasized that his popularity increased after he stood up to Trump.

Carney was the second favorite to be named Time's Person of the Year on major prediction markets on Tuesday, behind New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The final winner will be announced on December 10th.

Scott Galloway, a professor at New York University, said Carney was a sure winner and called him "the leader Europe has been looking for for the past 20 years." He added, "I'm convinced that Time's Person of the Year has been decided, and that's Carney."

Carney's international reputation quickly rose at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in January this year. He said at the forum that the old international order would not return, and middle countries should work together instead of waiting for order to be restored. His speech comes as Europe faces Trump's attempts to annex Greenland and the threat of tariffs. "We are in a rupture, not a transition," Carney said.
