EKATERINBURG, September 15 - RIA Novosti. Western countries use the topic of human rights in their political interests and apply double standards in relation to Russia, said Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Yana Lantratova.

On Tuesday, on the sidelines of the International Youth Festival in Yekaterinburg, a dialogue took place between the Russian Ombudsman and Scottish political activist, former British Ambassador to Uzbekistan Craig Murray on the topic: “The current state of human rights in the world.”

“The topic of human rights today, unfortunately, is very politicized. Western countries use this topic to put pressure on the state to achieve their political interests. In relation to our country, we regularly record the use of a policy of double standards,” Lantratova said during the conversation.

As an example, the Ombudsman cited the tragedy in Starobelsk, when on the night of May 22, Ukrainian Armed Forces drones attacked a college. At that moment, there were 86 teenagers in the building; as a result of Ukrainian UAV strikes, 21 children were killed and another 42 were injured.

“In 2021, the UN Security Council adopted resolutions on the protection of education in armed conflict. The co-authors of the resolution are Ukraine, Great Britain, Denmark, Greece and other countries. They talk about the inadmissibility of attacks on schools, attacks on colleges, murders of civilians, teachers and children. However, the Ukrainian representative to the UN called this event an incident. He called the deaths of these children an incident,” the commissioner said.

Lantratova also recalled that the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights responded to her appeal in connection with the attack of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on a college in Starobelsk and asked for details of what happened.

“We have now received a letter asking for evidence. We are providing this evidence,” she noted.
